Nevada Revised Statue (NRS) assign each County's Sheriff the responsibility of searching for lost people within their respective counties.  Elko County’s Sheriff, Dale Lotspeich has asked the Posse and Elko County Search and Rescue to ultimately provide Elko County with “full-service” search and rescue (SAR) teams to help him meet his responsibilities. In order to fulfill the Sheriff’s request, ECSP/ECSAR is soliciting Elko County residents in a search for volunteers interested in participating in Search and Rescue training and searching for lost people.

 

SAR is looking for talent and leadership in several different SAR services areas:

  • Rope skills, high/low-angle rescue
  • K-9 (tracking/trailing, area, human remains (HRD))
  • Fast-water rescue and still water recovery
  • Avalanche rescue
  • Special Vehicles (ATV, snowmobiles, boats, aircraft)
  • Off-highway vehicles (OHV)
  • Trackers
  • Skills in the area of incident command (IC)
  • Horizontal ice rescue
  • Land navigation
  • Equestrian SAR
  • Wilderness survival

 

Those interested can involve themselves at different levels:

  • As an active member of Elko County SAR (requires a complete application)*
  • As a citizen not wanting to join and train regularly with SAR, but having a valuable and unique SAR talent or resource they would commit at the time of a search (requires a letter of intent/involvement submitted to the ECSAR. *
  • Citizens who are willing to provide their personal services in support of a missing person search (requires a letter of intent/involvement) *

Please note on the envelope either “SAR Application”, or “SAR Letter of Intent”.

                             * Active membership requires finger  printing and is conditional on passing a federal background check and a peer-group review. 
            Although ESCAR is attached to the Sheriff's Office, SAR members are neither required to qualify for, nor provide armed/unarmed law enforcment services.  
  ECSAR uses the letter of intent/involvement  solely as a resource guide.  It neither obligates the individual nor their resources/equipment to the ECSAR in any way or fashion.
